Did Noah’s flood really happen? If so, was it a local flood or a global flood? These are the first questions that come up when we think or talk about Noah’s flood.
Yes there was a Noah’s flood and yes it was a total global flood. How do I know this? This is what the Bible says and there is much evidence that we can look at in nature to show that there was a great flood and we can see the effects globally.
Since the flood was a global flood, how did it happen? I will show you the true history of the event from the Bible. Where did all of the water come from? Noah’s flood was more than just a rain storm. The Bible says that the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were open. (Genesis 7:11)
Has Noah’s Ark been found? Noah’s Ark landed on Mt. Ararat and the search goes on today for the great ark that carried Noah and his family to safety. I will report on many of these attempts by many of these explorers to find Noah’s Ark.
A Summary of Noah—The Ark—and the Flood
Since many people may not be too familiar with what the Bible says about Noah and his flood. I have decided to write a summary here of what went on during the flood. Many people may not be aware of all the details concerning Noah’s flood or they might have been told some things that are not true about the flood.
Starting in Genesis chapter six we read about the ungodly that are multiplying through the whole earth. “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth; and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5 NKJV®) The LORD was very sorry that He created man. The LORD said further, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ (Genesis 6:7 NKJV®)
There was one man and his family left on earth that still loved the LORD. The Bible says that Noah walked with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Noah was married and so were his sons, so it was eight people who truly loved the LORD.
God told Noah that He would destroy the earth by flooding it. Noah was told by God to build an ark for his family so they would be saved from the destruction. God gave very specific instructions about how to build the ark.
In the King James Version of the Bible God said, “Make thee an ark of gopher wood; …” (Genesis 6:14a KJV). What is gopher wood? The original Hebrew word that was translated in English as “gopher” is unclear in meaning. This Hebrew word was only used once in the scriptures. The Hebrew word could have been misspelled. Some scholars say the spelling should be kupar instead of gopher. If kupar is the word than the species of the tree would be cypress. Many modern Bible translations say “cypress.”2
The Amplified Bible says gopher or cypress wood. The Contemporary English Version says “good lumber.” I guess you can’t be too wrong there. The strangest translation that I have come across is from the Message Bible. This translation was made by a single individual, Pastor Eugene H. Peterson. The Message Bible says, “Teakwood.” Why teakwood? I should ask Pastor Peterson. Translation of the Bible by only one person may not be the best choice, even if that person is very skilled in the vocabulary and grammar of Hebrew and Greek.
If gopher wood was a species of wood in the time of Noah it could have become extinct. The world at the time of Noah I believe was very different then the world that we are living in today. The pressure of the flood waters has changed the surface of the earth dramatically. I will go into that later. Also I believe the continental shifts due to the earth’s plate tectonics may have tossed plants and animals about.
I personally believe that the word “gopher” refers to a process and not a species of tree. This process that I am referring to would be a laminating process similar to plywood. Panels of wood could have been laminated together by some type of glue, pitch or pegs which could have been used to join these wood panels tightly together. This would have given the ark more strength. The frame of the ark could have been built by laminated wooden beams. For example in the Greek Septuagint LXX “gopher” is translated as “squared beams.” In the Latin Vulgate Bible “gopher” is translated as “planed wood.”3
Ending with Chapter six verse four God tells Noah to make rooms in the ark and to cover the ark inside and out with pitch. Natural pitch was a resin extracted from certain trees for waterproofing. Next God gives the dimensions of the size of the ark. The ark was to have a length of 300 cubits, a width of 50 cubits, and a height of 30 cubits. The average cubit which was the span of an average man’s hand to elbow was about what we would call 18 inches or one and a half feet. If we multiply these cubit dimensions by 1.5 which is one and a half feet we get a length of 450 feet, width 75 feet, and height of 45 feet.
God told Noah to put in a window a cubit above. The door was to be put on the side of the ark. The ark was to have three decks. In verse 17 God reassures Noah that He the LORD God will flood the earth. God is not talking about a local flood here. God promises a special covenant to Noah. Noah and his family are to go into the ark along with two of every sort of animal, male and female. I’m sure Noah didn’t bring every single species of animals. For example the ark probably had one type of dog, cat, bird, lizard, turtle etc. I don’t believe all the various species of lizards, dogs, cats, turtles, or birds were on the ark. Many of these animals have been formed through the years from hybridization. Before God told Noah to get into the ark He told him to bring food along for his family and animals.
In chapter seven of Genesis we see that the day to go into the ark was now. “Then the LORD said to Noah, ‘Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.’” (Genesis 7:1 NKJV®)
Next God tells Noah to take along with him seven pairs of animals male and female. These animals were to be sacrificially clean. Another pair was selected of the unclean variety. Seven pairs of birds were to be selected—male and female. The reason for selecting both male and female was to ensure every kind of living creature would survive the flood.
Now the LORD told Noah, ‘For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.’ (Genesis 7:4 NKJV®) Noah obeyed all of what God had said. At this time in Noah’s life the Bible indicates that he was 600 years-old.4
Most of the people before the flood lived very long lives. Many lived up to 900 years. How was this possible? Before the flood the earth was quite a bit different. All that water caused a lot of damage. The climate would have been affected along with the atmosphere and ozone layer. Another factor that adds to this is sin. In chapter six of Genesis God talks about the ungodly that are multiplying on the face of the earth and that He was sorry that He made them. Notice in verse three: “And the LORD said, ‘My Spirit will not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.’” (Genesis 6:3 NKJV®)
Then Noah’s family entered the ark. In verse 16 it says the LORD shut him in. Seven days later came the flood. In verse 11 it says that the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. “And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights. (Genesis 7:12 NKJV®)
Where Did All That Water Come From?
I don’t believe the flood was caused by just a rain storm alone, even though it rained forty days and forty nights. The water flooded the whole earth. Remember verse 11 says that the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Many Bible scholars and I believe that before the flood the earth’s atmosphere was very different. They believe in a vaporous water canopy which was part of the earth’s atmosphere which protected the earth from rain storms, wind and cold temperatures.5 The water canopy was like a giant greenhouse that enveloped the earth in this protective shell. It was probably warm and humid. This vapor or mist was transparent, but was concentrated enough to include vast quantities of water. Although it is not water vapor, many of our planets in the solar system have a type of protective canopy like Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. If you look at Genesis 2:5-6 the Bible mentions that there was no rain on the earth, but a mist went up from the earth and watered the ground. In Psalm 148:4 the Bible mentions that there are waters above the heavens.
Going back to Genesis 7:11 the Bible states that the fountains of the great deep were broken up…. I and many Bible scholars believe that these great fountains of the deep ruptured through the crust of the earth. These fountains exploded large volumes of water all over the surface of the earth.
Dr. Walter Brown claims this is how the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was formed which is the longest mountain range on the earth. It extends about 40,000 miles long and wraps around the earth. You will find this mountain range at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean midway between the two American continents and Europe and Africa. The entire formation is called the Mid-Oceanic Ridge.6
Dr. Walter Brown has put together a model that explains how the fountains of the deep ruptured through the earth’s crust at the time of the flood. He calls it the Hydroplate Theory. You can watch a short video which shows an animated model of what the Hydroplate Theory is.
The waters kept increasing and lifted Noah’s Ark high above the waters on the earth. The ark began to move across the waters. The water covered the mountains and every man and animal that lived on the earth died. Only Noah and his family along with the animals remained safe and alive, because they were in the ark. The waters of the flood dominated the earth 150 days.
Then God created a wind which passed over the earth and the waters began to subside. At this time God also stopped the water from the windows of heaven and the fountains of the deep. The rain that fell from heaven was also stopped. At the end of the 150 days the water decreased. Finally the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. Three months later the water had decreased enough to see the tops of the mountains of Ararat. Now that’s a lot of water. At the end of 40 days Noah opened the window of the ark. Noah sent out a raven. This raven kept flying over the waters until the land was dry. He also sent out a dove. The dove could find no dry land so it flew back to Noah. Noah waited for another seven days and released the dove again from the ark. This time the dove flew back to Noah in the evening of that day with an olive leaf held in its beak. Noah knew then that the flood waters had diminished. Noah waited another seven days and released the dove again, but this time the dove did not return.
At this time in life Noah had just turned 601. In the first month from his birthday he removed the covering of the ark and observed that the ground was dry. On the second month on the 27th day of that month the ground was completely dry. God spoke to Noah these words. ‘Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons, and your son’s wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you: birds and cattle, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.’ (Genesis 8:16-17 NKJV®)
Next Noah builds an altar to the LORD. He took the sacrificially clean animals and birds and offered burnt offerings on the altar. After smelling the soothing aroma on the altar the LORD spoke to Noah from His heart, He truly loved Noah. ‘I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.’ (Genesis 8:21 NKJV®)
God gave Noah and every living creature a covenant. This special covenant was between HIM and the earth and all flesh that dwell on it. Here is God’s special covenant. ‘I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.’(Genesis 9:13-15 NKJV®)Do you see how important this rainbow covenant is? God promises that He will never destroy all flesh on the earth with a flood. Some people actually believe that Noah’s flood was a local flood. This belief of a local flood is blasphemous to God. The belief in a local flood calls God a liar. These people should be ashamed for even thinking such thoughts and repent.
Noah’s flood could not be a local flood because of the rainbow covenant. There have been many floods in history too numerous to count that have killed many animals and people. Remember recently the Tsunami in Asia? Countless numbers of people and animals have been killed in the great Tsunami flood. 'God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?’ (Numbers 23:19 NKJV®) Also if you look at fossils from all over the world they witness a global flood because of their rapid burial.
We Christians should rejoice over the beauty of the rainbow. Many Christians are hesitant to claim a part in the joy of the rainbow because of homosexual groups who use a rainbow symbol to celebrate their practice of sin. I love the rainbow and I won’t let their perverted lifestyle rob my joy of the rainbow. We must pray that these people would find the joy of the LORD through Jesus Christ and become a born-again Christian.©www.biblepicturegallery.com
Did you know that the homosexual rainbow is different from the real rainbow? The homosexual rainbow flag has six colors in it: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Six symbolizes the number of man.7 The real rainbow has seven colors in it which symbolizes completeness. The colors in the real rainbow are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

In all the years I have been in photography I am surprised that I do not have a photograph of a rainbow in my files. I found this photo through istockphoto.com. It was taken at Kauai in Hawaii.
Thank you for reading this summary of Noah’s flood. Before I wrote anything else about Noah’s flood I wanted you to be completely familiar with the event of Noah’s flood.Photo by ©Marianna Meliksetyan/istockphoto.com
